Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on April 4, 1972, in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Scott was raised as an only daughter by her grandmother. Scott received her education at Philadelphia High School for Girls. Upon graduation, Scott enrolled into Temple University. She completed her secondary education there while working two jobs. She wanted to be an high school English teacher. However, her dream was in vain when she left college after three year of studies and was a teacher's assistant. She began her career with a performance artist who spoke words, performing her pieces in live poetry readings. Then she teamed up together with Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. The two ended up working together as well as co-writing You Got Me. In the Roots show she was spotted as an artist. Then she secured collaborations including with Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. She was able to perform through the Canada production of Broadway's show Rent. She was also the very first signed by Hidden Beach Recordings.
